Yesterdays New Yorker Magazine cover depicted Barack and Michelle Obama as fun-loving Islamic terrorists, rejoicing in the oval office under a portrait of Osama.
Here is what bothers me about the cover:
Most people won't get it. As ridiculous as they are, these are accusations the Obama campaign have been struggling with. Cartooning him next to a burning American flag, even though the intent was clearly satirical, does not help his public image. It is rather obvious that visual media and advertising excites the American people more than the substance of what is being advertised. Thus, anyone that lacks the curiosity to peruse the pages of the New Yorker, and merely glances at the cover page, may not
Here is what bothers me the most about the cover:
It's not funny. Even if people did get it, they wouldn't laugh. I believe its rather stale, in fact.

I couldn't agree with you more. Running for president is serious business. While the country is still in the process of getting to know Barak Obama, it is of vital importance that he be represented authentically to the American people. It is his integrity, his inspiration and his vision for our country that needs to be portrayed in the media. Lets leave the sense of humor for all the future photo shoots of President Obama!
Regardless, though, of whether or not it's funny, it isn't the NYM's job to be politically neutral or report Obama's message. It's their job to be entertaining and provocative; and clearly, they've succeeded. I don't think it's neccesarily their concern whether people get it.
